NichollsShotTHIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University Department of Athletics announced today that Stopher Gym, home of the Colonel’s men’s basketball team, will undergo extensive renovations beginning at the end of the season that will kick start a facilities enhancement project throughout the department over the next few years.

The project, which will break ground shortly after the completion of the 2013-14 season, will focus much of its efforts on a complete overhaul and redesign of the men’s basketball locker room and coaches offices, while also touching a few other areas around the facility which will receive an update of some sort throughout the building stages.

“For too long, our men’s basketball team has been in substandard conditions that have needed a major change for a while now,” athletic director Rob Bernardi said. “It’s a credit to the coaching staff and the players that they do not allow these things to become obstacles for them and they continue to produce winning seasons like they are currently doing.”

The total cost of the project, with all of the funds coming from monies raised by the Colonel Athletic Association, capital outlay and private donations and not from University funds, will total $680 Thousand, with $530 Thousand going toward the men’s basketball center and another $150 Thousand toward a brand new high definition video scoreboard and replacement scoreboard on each end of the court.

“This is a major step forward for Nicholls basketball, and as a former player here I can assure you that these renovations were long overdue,” Nicholls Associate AD for External Affairs Brandon Ruttley said. “We want to provide the very best student-athlete experience and help them to win championships, and hopefully this project makes both of them possible.”

Featuring a brand new, private entrance for the players and coaches, the offices for the staff will feature updated offices, lobby area and meeting rooms, while the players will have a renovated lounge area with televisions and audio equipment, leading into a state-of-the-art locker room that will have a power source at each one.

The current athletic training room will be gutted and added to the renovations to the locker room and coaches offices and moved to another area of the building which will quadruple the current size and feature more training tables, storage and laundry equipment. Another locker room for visiting teams will also be created in an area to be determined later.

Replacing the current ones, Stopher will feature a 27-foot video board that is currently on the Quad side entrance of the court that will be double the size of the one there now, while the dot-matrix board over the main entrance will be removed in favor of another, smaller LED board.
